EXPLORING YOUR IMAGE - PART 4 OF THE (RE)BRAND YOURSELF SERIES

October 12, 2015

Oh my gosh , it's Monday - AGAIN! Can't believe the weekend has flown so quickly!
Anyway Faithful Reader, Happy Monday To You! I hope it's a good one!

As you know, Mondays are all about our (Re)Brand Yourself Series where I happily show you how you can change 'YOU'  from what you were previously known for into what you now aspire to be synonymous with.
And now that we've talked about How Your Personal Story Can Help Mold Your Brand it only makes sense to follow that up with addressing your image. You know, your signature look.
And I say 'Signature Look' particularly because it is hugely important that you understand the power of a well curated image when it comes to delivering an amazing, powerful, and heck, even life-changing Personal Brand Experience. You wanna be on point with your image to the point that when someone sees your work, or anything about you, they just say, "Oh,  this is by  so-and-so!" because that's how prolific your brand is! Are you  with me?!
Good!
Because the measure of a good brand, i.e. YOU, is when that brand ('YOU') can easily be identifiable without any need of an introduction! If you can achieve that, that's when you'll know you're on point because how you appear to others plays a huge factor in how others receive you. It is actually  the difference between being taken seriously and simply being tossed aside as a non-contender!
Because here's the thing about branding: image plays a huge part in how you tell your story and in how people perceive you - and that's a Fact! That's why huge multinationals pay millions in establishing and maintaining a certain kinda image because they know the unwritten rules of branding, i.e. Creating and maintaining Visual Consistency!
For example, if you research Zaha Hadid, she's almost always wearing black in a very demure yet understated manner, whilst her style of architecture on the other hand is anything but understated. It is glam, futuristic, and quite effeminate in its sinuous form! And that's how you always know her work because she's nailed a particular style of architecture down to a 'T'! And that's not easy to do by the way -  but it's all part of her branding.
Because  Zaha Hadid knows  that through your image, you can say a lot without necessarily uttering a single word.

SO LET'S EXPLORE WHAT I MEAN BY IMAGE
Well, an image has been defined as "a general impression that a person, organisation, or product represents to the public." It is a perception of you that you can carefully curate in order to tell a specific dialogue or narrative because curating an image is like telling a story, but only this time, you're telling it visually as opposed to verbally.

SO HOW DO YOU TELL YOUR STORY VISUALLY AS OPPOSED TO VERBALLY?
Well, you can  do it by applying a combination of  a few proven methods. You can curate your Visual Story and Identity through:-
  1. A Personal Logo or Wordmark of your name.
  2. Having a specially selected corporate  key colors as part of your Visual Identity. These colors can be applied to your website, product design, marketing collateral, and even subtly added to your wardrobe - that's' how far you can take it!
  3. Having a specially selected corporate Typefaces - these can be used on your Marketing Collateral, website design, Logo or Wordmark as these will be a few fonts that you can specifically select to be used as part of your Visual Brand Identity.
  4. Having a consistent style of imagery used in all of your social and digital  platforms, as well as print material. You don't have to use the same images, BUT you should have a consistent look and feel to all of your imagery; and trust me, I know how hard that can be to achieve!

All of these play a huge role in telling your visual story - in setting your visual Identity and therefore creating a brand called 'You'!
SO HERE'S THE TAKE-AWAY:
Make it a point to always be on point with your imagery - how you look, how you dress, what fonts you choose for you digital platforms, the colors you choose to use, et cetera; et cetera! because you only have one shot to make an impact - and you do that through a well articulated, well curated, and well displayed visual story, also known as Brand Experience!
